The Brief
Design a table/task light utilizing new technologies. The materials you can use are reclaimed wood, sheet metal, and acrylic.
Key Research Findings
LED Strips:
These flexible strips can allow lighting to fit into compact spaces and be wrapped around flowing structures.
Total Internal Reflection:
An optical phenomenon, where light ‘bends’ within a material. Utilizing this method of transporting and redirecting light would create a unique lamp that is unlike most lamps currently on the market.
Touch Sensors:
Switches and buttons can give satisfying feedback to users but can be difficult for some individuals to operate. Touch sensors would make it easier for more individuals to operate this product, while also giving it a sleek appearance.

Outcome
Inspired by how taps direct water into a sink, this lamp directs light within sheet acrylic to the workspace through total internal reflection. This gives the lamp the illusion it is ‘bending’ light towards the users’ desk space. The lamp also gives the acrylic sheet an ambient glow while still directing enough light to the work surface. Upholding this curved light is a redwood base with an attractive grain pattern. Within this base is a recessed aluminium touch pad which makes it easy and simple to turn the light on and off.
Less is more. Bending light within an elegant and simple form.
